Q&a: What Is the Best Way to Make a Warm Bath Without a Working Water Heater?

Question from glennevert: What is the best way to make a warm bath without a working water heater?
I tried boiling some water but it didn’t make any difference on the water temp. Is there any product out there that you can put in your tub to heat the water?

…oh be careful…I wouldn’t want for you to get electrocuted…Boil some water, and then mix a little water with it, and take a bucket bath. That’s what we do in South India when the weather gets cold. We don’t have water heaters. You use a cup to get wet. Lather up, and rinse off. It’s pretty simple and efficient.

Answer by kitchenchemist
Does your washing machine heat it’s own water, if so, set for a hot wash and run empty, hang the hose into the bathtub and let it make you some hot water. Disconnect and then take a bath.

or Use a solar camping shower.

We used to have an old bathtub outside, in the woods. My sister and I put a fire under it once and got the water too hot. Took a long time to cool down. Then we hopped in and then the mosquitoes attacked. We forgot a net or we might have stayed in longer. :)

I’ve owned a Hot Springs spa and was pretty happy with it. They no longer make the model that I had, but I’m attaching a link for a similar one. It was about $ 5K. It needed water treatment about once a month and needed to be emptied scrubbed and refilled about every 6 months. No idea how long it would last. We only had it for a couple of years before we moved. It had two large cartridge filters.

Best Way to Unclog a Tub?

Tub is clogged and will not drain. WIll using drain-o work if I just poor it in or should I use a plunger first and try it that way?

Answer by hollifieldrobert
go to lowes home depot and buy a tool a think it called handy zip or something like that there cheap made of plastic will get hair out of your drain

Answer by paranut59
Pull the water stop out and check to see if it is clogged with hair. If not you may need to access the trap and remove clog there. If this fails, call a plumber.

Answer by Drakestone
Try a plunger first
2) HOT water
3) A plumber’s snake

If those three fail, then try chemicals

DO NOT use a plunger on a clogged drain after pouring in chemicals

Answer by iroquiscave
Using an acid of any kind usually does not work when the tub is clogged. Not only does it not clear the drain, now you have a clogged tub full of acidy water. A plunger, commonly called a force cup will only help if you use it to pull the clog towards you. Most hardware stores sell what is called a zip strip, a long plastic wire tie looking thing, that is pushed into the drain to retrieve the clog. (hair, obstructions). I have the perfect tool, a pair of hemostats that are curved that can be inserted into the drain to retrieve the clog. You can remove an enormous amount of hair this way, you’ll think you lost Fluffy the cat down there. (very gross and nasty) Happy hunting!

Answer by JW
Many people do not know how to use a plunger on a tub.
If there is no water in the tub then put a little in. Use a wet washcloth to close off the overflow(usually where the handle to close the tub drain is) so when you plunge you are not just pushing pressure up the overflow pipe. It helps to have someone hold the wet washcloth closing off the overflow, holding a good seal, and someone vigorously plunging.
Do not do this if you have added a pipe cleaner acid.
Good luck.

What Is the Best Wet/dry Vac for Me?

Question from John: What is the best wet/dry vac for me?
Im looking for a durable small to medium sized wet dry vac 5-16 gallons I want something that has alot of power and durability preferably easy to move around but not the backpack style price is a concern but if the vac is worth it it doesn’t matter I would also I would use it for detailing cars draining water from a hot tub and general cleaning

Best Answers:

Answer by Amroth
I think all shop vacs are both wet and dry in one. Even the cheap ones do both I bought one for $ 40 and it works grate. the only difference is when you soak up something wet you have to take out a paper filter. The more expensive ones have bigger tanks and horse power. So the more you spend the more you get.

What Is the Best Way to Seal a Tub and Surround?

Question from sparky: What is the best way to seal a tub and surround?
I have a stud mounted surround, but the gaps between the surround and the tub have varing sizes. What should I use to make it look uniform? The surrond has curved corners.

Thanks

Answer by Willy r
get some molding from the hardware it comes in many different sises and shape glue it up if necessary.

Answer by roberto
silicone caulk the same color as the surround. 65

Answer by Bookbinder
Before you fill the gap around the tub, half fill the tub with cold water. This will simulate the weight of a person in the tub. If you don’t put the water in, and you seal around the tub, when someone gets in to take a bath, their weight (plus the water) will probably cause the tub to settle slightly, thus opening up the gap again. (You could use hot water, of course, it doesn’t really matter, but cold water is cheaper!)

Q&a: What Is the Best Way to Prevent a Tub from Clogging?

Question from michiganbeagle1977: What is the best way to prevent a tub from clogging?
I still have copper piping in my home, and every now and then the tug will clog up. This morning I had to use a toilet plunger to unclog my
tub because the bath water from last night was still in there. I have bought something made to cover the tub’s drain that is supposed to catch hair and stuff. It works. However, I want to be sure that I don’t have another clog again. Thanks!
I was able to get the tub to drain this morning, thank goodness. I appreciate the advice!

Answer by Fordguy87
Keep using your cover thing, and once in a while, maybe every few months, run a drain auger (or if you don’t have one, a long wire with a hook bent on the end will work) down into the trap and pull out any hair or debris that may be caught in it. This should keep it from getting completely clogged up

Answer by M P
You need to ask a plumber what is a safe drain cleaner for that type of plumbing and use it regularly.
It really sounds like you have a major problem that is not being cleared out by the plunger. You need a cleaner that you can leave in there for quit a while to eat away at the blockage. Then run the water hard for a while to see if you can flush it on down & out. If the water backs up again you need a plumber.

Answer by princess
I agree with one, a pipe snake you can buy at home hardware stores and it will hopefully remove or loosen clog, keep drain strainer in place.
Look for a foam type clog remover . Or a plumber.

Answer by Blunt,to the point &comic satire
You or others have long hair I am assuming. You wash it in the tub. with lots of shampoo, soap and conditioner. Right? You are losing hair. Which is a natural occurrance. And you are draining that all down the drain. Well soap and conditioner and hair make for a nice clump of grunge. which sits in the P trap. You probably got a good build up of crap in there. empty the tub. If you have one of those chrome plugs that stay in the tub and you press onto to close up the drain – they unscrew so you can see directly down the drain. All that should be there is a cross piece of metal like a plus sign and 4 holes (one in each corner) If you cannot see the plus sign, that is because there is hair grunge right there. Take your finger with a good nail and stick it in and scoop out the hair ball as much as you can(it is soap, hair and conditioner above the P trap) Already that is going to help. Put in trash or toilet.
Then go to the stove and boil up some water(finding the biggest pots you can to make as much boiling water as you can. Then take water up in the pots and pour a stream from the pot directly into the drain hole from at least standing height….so the hot water pounds down into the drainhole. This hot water will pound at the soap hair gunge that got past the cross piece and is sitting in the P trap- melting the soap away and forcing it all down the drain into the sewer or septic tank. Once you have used all the boiling water from all the pots, follow it up by pouring hot water out of the taps and having that go directly down the drain to flush the pipes clean.
Should work normally again.
This most often occurs with single long haired males or females who are lenient with water useage….as not enough is being used to to clean the pipes.

No need for plunger or any harsh chemicals(which just eat out the metal pipes..

Which Hot Water Heater Is Best for This Application?

Question from Uncle Dud: Which hot water heater is best for this application?
Have a boiler hot water heater. It is ok in the winter but it really stinks in the summer. Last spring I built a solar heater to preheat the water (it cost me about 300 bucks) It has almost paid for itself in addition I have more hot water. I would like to just shut the boiler down in the summer and run it in the winter. What kind of hot water heating system can someone recommend for the summer? I thought about tank less, electric or LP or a small electric tank.

Best Answers:

Answer by mmgak06
It will depend on how much hot water you will be using if you have more than 3 people in your house I would go to a regular heater. or if you have a high demand for such as a jet tub if it is just you and your other I would get a tank less. I have one in my cabin and it is nice and care free system.

What Is the Best (easiest) Way to Level a Hot Tub on a Wooden Freestanding Deck?

Question from Donna: What is the best (easiest) way to level a hot tub on a wooden freestanding deck?

Best Answers:

Answer by Dan
Lumber yards sell wooden shims

Answer by sunshine951951
First of all, the weight of a hot tub with water is not safe for most freestanding decks.
Second, make sure the deck is properly coated with water protector because mold = wood rot and wood rot = your hot tub falling through the deck.
To answer your basic question, wood shims.

Answer by Dr. Hot Tub Wilmington NC
First. Most decks are adequate that I see on a daily basis to hold the weight of a hot tub, since most decks are built by a contractor that realizes if they don’t build to code then that contractors licence will be in jeopardy. The standard rule of thumb is 2×12′s on twelve inch centers with 6×6 posts. Hanger Joists and Concrete footers.

If your tub is more then 1.5″ uneven you have real problems. You can obviously use shims but the problem that could be created is bigger then it being not level. The bottom of the tub needs to be fully grounded against the deck. so if you use shims on one side they need to be very very long and used completely on the whole side of the tub. If you don’t your possibly looking at putting increased pressure on the shell of the tub because the tub is not evenly seated stressing out the weak inner shell which can and will in time break the shell. I see this problem once a month.

The Best Heat Setting for a Hot Tub?

Question from Michael: the best heat setting for a hot tub?
I am trying to set the program for my hot tub for the most economical way of using it. I would like to use it at about 36-37 degrees but don’t want it on all the time. It seems to be heating nicely with my heating logo staying on but when it gets to a certain temperature it then starts to flash and my pumps will not work, I have to turn it off and then back on? what’s going wrong?

Best Answers:

Answer by William B
37 deg ? that’s almost freezing,
try 98 to 100 deg

Answer by roger
I keep my hot tub at 103 to 104 Deg F . Most hot tubs should come on and off to keep the temperature at the setting automatically.

Answer by Comp-Elect
William B and roger, the 36-37 is in celcius not fahrenheit

This equals 96.8 to 98.6 F

If this is an electronic thermostat with an electronic controller, it sounds like one or the other is defective or requires resetting.

You may have to call in a service company which is experienced with that system.
